{12-15 months} Cooper's Favorites!

  • 8" Monster Treads Steiger Shake N Sound : This tractor is very cool!  It has a little gray button on it to activate shaking and monster engine sounds.  Cooper still loves to play with the tractor, along with trucks and trains.
  • Elevate Kitchen Utensil Set by Joseph Joseph : I got these as a gift a couple Christmases ago.  In the past few months, Cooper has discovered that there are items in kitchen drawers and these are some of his favorite things to take out.  He'll carry one around the house, sometimes hitting things with it or trying to get Mitsy, our mini Schnauzer.  We've been working on the "hitting isn't nice" deal . . .
  • Step2 All Around Wagon : Everyone LOVES this wagon!  I searched high and low for what I felt was a useful wagon . . . and decided on this one.  If you follow the link and click through the photos you will see it has some cool storage space - I just really loved that idea, especially if we want to take it on a trip to the zoo or take some items with us to the park.  Cooper and his buddy, Weston, ride in it almost every day.  Weston loves to come over and ask for a "ride" and then point across to the other seat and say "Ooper"!
  • LeapFrog Animal Adventure Learning Table :  Cooper got this table as a first birthday gift from some friends.  The day went like this : everyone came over, we opened gifts, we had some lunch, sang Cooper his birthday song, watched him eat some cake, and then he crashed into a nap!  However, RIGHT after his nap this was the first toy he went to and he loved listening to it and pushing its buttons so much.  Lately he's been pushing it around the house and flipping it upside down.  Apparently he doesn't want to learn to count or say his ABC's anymore . . .
  • Melissa & Doug Geometric Stacker : This thing is so fun!  At first Cooper didn't quite get the idea of taking off and putting back on.  He gets that now and it's so fun watching him.  Next idea to get is to put them all together in the correct place, like the picture shows.  He likes to mix them up!

Cooper's Favorite Toys from Year 1!

  1. Fisher Price Baby's First Blocks : Cooper was 6 months at Christmas time when he received this bucket of blocks.  Clearly, the point is to put the blocks through the correct shaped hole, but at that age he was working on grasping and chewing and chewing and chewing some more.  This is definitely a toy that is used as they grow because he is now putting the blocks through the correct hole!  He absolutely loves this toy.
  2. Manhattan Toy Winkle : This was our absolute favorite toy for Cooper . . . turns out it was one of his favorites, too!  He started playing with this while I was still on maternity leave - grasping and staring at the bright colors.  The inside square is a mini rattle as well.  It's definitely one of my favorite baby gifts to give to new mama's.
  3. Baby Einstein Musical Motion Activity Jumper : Cooper loved spending a lot of time in this jumper and he would seriously "go to town" in it!  He would jump for days if we let him!  Before his feet would reach the floor, we would put the boppy under it and get his feet touching that.  That way he could at least look around at all of the objects, the sun was his favorite!  After he was able to reach the floor, he was a spinning and bouncing fool!  It was definitely a good activity for him while we were trying to get something else done around the house.
  4. Vtech Sit-to-Stand Learning Walker :  Cooper received this as a Christmas gift, so he was a little over 6 months old.  It has two "speeds" on the wheels so you can basically set it so it is very difficult to push/move or for it to be easier to push/move.  At first we would sit it in front of Cooper while he was sitting on the floor and he would play with the front toys on it.  His favorite was to rip the phone off of it or open and close the door.  Once he started showing us that he was fairly stable standing while holding onto something, we would let him balance with the walker.  He then eventually began walking while pushing it.  This or any other version of a walker is probably a must-have!
  5. Vulli Sophie the Giraffe - So'Pure Vanilla Teether : We have 3 different Sophie's, but this one is hands down our favorite.  Cooper was able to easily grasp this one at a younger age, than the normal Sophie, because of the rings around it.  Sophie is made in France out of all natural rubber and food paint and all of the small parts help soothe baby gums.  Oh! We have also nicknamed her Girlfriend Sophie.  The only one that we have left out is the bath Sophie.

In the Spirit of Harvest . . .

We finally got a "free" weekend (very rare around here) and decided to create a sensory table for Cooper!  It was, of course, farm related.

As a family, we headed to Ankeny's new Fleet Farm and picked up a 50lb bag of whole corn.  While we were at Fleet Farm we also found a new cow and dump truck . . . I was a little bummed with their very limited section of toys.  Apparently their large section of farm toys will be in stock by mid-October . . . perfect timing for Christmas, I suppose.

Fleet Farm was out of the shallow plastic containers, so we made a stop at Menards for a few more things and to locate a plastic container.  Of course Menards didn't have any, so we had to do another quick stop in search for a plastic container and WOO HOO, Wal-Mart had one!  However . . . before heading home to setup this fun farm sensory table, we made another stop at Lemon Tree for some yummy frozen yogurt.

Once we got home, Nick dumped out all 50lbs of the corn into the container and I grabbed all the farm and truck toys to put in it.  Cooper absolutely LOVED it!  At first, he wanted to throw all the kernels out, but then he started to scoop and move his animals around in the corn.  We had so much fun playing and laughing this afternoon around the little corn pit!

Cooper was busy this morning!  He had his buddy, Bennett, over to play + eat lunch.

We played outside for a little bit with the ball, truck, trike + mower . . .

Cooper wouldn't sit still for a good pic of the two boys!

We then took the boys inside for a little more play time + lunch . . .

These boys love the farm toys!

Ok . . . they got a few pieces of Casey's donuts too ;)

Cooper is now fast asleep . . . thanks for coming over Bennett + Jami!

Cooper's Favorite Accessories!

You will soon realize that I LOVE to talk baby . . . from pregnancy to birth + all the super fun stuff in-between, like registries + favorite things I've been given by other mom's or that I've found on my own!  If you've talked to me in person before and I know you are expecting or have a child, I'm sure I've talked to you about at least one of the above topics.  I will admit, I am a tad overwhelming about it and I know this, but I honestly can't help it.

Here are Cooper's favorite accessories from the last 15 months . . .

the north face baby hoser hat {gift from Grandma + Grandpa Martens}:  I really need to find this and try it on Coop's big noggin to make sure it still fits!  The size on it is up to 24 months, so I'm really hoping it does.  Not only is it super cute, but warm too!  We purchased the matching jacket at the end of this past Winter season and got it for $25, originally priced at $70!  Not even joking.  I'm currently contemplating getting the matching pants, but I don't think they are water resistant, so what's the point?  We need something to wear when playing outside in the snow this year!  I should mention that the jacket and pants are reversible, all blue on one side and the cute camo polar bears on the other.

skip hop lunchie {gift from Grandma Hitsman}:  This lunch bag is so great!  Cooper got it for Christmas, so he was 6 months old.  At this time we were still taking bottles of breast-milk, and then later formula, to baby school.  We were also taking baby food and snacks to baby school, until he was a year old.  This lunch bag makes it easy to transfer all of the above mentioned items:  3 bottles, 2 baby food jars, 1-2 snacks.  Even though we don't use it for baby school anymore {he eats all of their food and drinks their whole milk}, we use it anytime we travel to transfer snacks, whole milk, water, food.  Plus, once he's elementary age and he needs a school lunch packed, we can still use it!

amber for babies raw amber teething necklace {we purchased}:  I will have to admit, I did NOT discover the raw amber teething necklace myself.  There is a couple in DSM that has a cute little girl and I noticed she wore one, but I wasn't quite sold yet.  However, then I saw another gal on Facebook that I knew from elementary school, and noticed her little boy had one on in a picture.  I asked her about it and she said she definitely believed in them and all THREE of her boys used them.  I'm glad I bit the bullet and purchased . . . we were at the point where Cooper was really in pain from teething and I felt that we had given him too much Tylenol.  We wanted to try anything else . . . I purchased the Razbaby Teether and he hated it, so I purchased the necklace and we truly believe it's helped.  At first we didn't let him sleep with it, but one night he was so upset, Nick told me to put the necklace on . . . Cooper slept all night.  We haven't taken it off since.  Thank you to those two gals for showing me this amazing product.  P.S. amber for babies has a sale right now + I have heard that raw (not polished) and the lightest color of amber is the BEST.  But, remember it doesn't work for everyone.

pottery barn kids turtle/stripe beach wrap {gift from Grandma + Grandpa Martens}:  Cooper got this towel for Easter from my parents and we used it all Summer long.  Not only did Coop take it to the lake, to the pool, but every week to baby school for water play days.  I think we can easily transfer this to a bathroom towel now . . . I'm afraid he could be too big for it next summer.  You cannot see in the picture above, but on the back of the towel it has a blue turtle and Cooper is embroidered below.

keen newport h2 {gift from the Wolfe Family}:  We LOVE shoes!  Cooper has so many pairs of shoes, but these were our favorite for the last 3 months!  He's outgrown them now, but perfect timing since Summer is basically over.  The Wolfe's came to Cooper's 1st birthday party and this was their great gift to him.  The rubber toe is great so they can't stub their little toes.  Cooper wore these in the lake up North over the 4th of July holiday and has also walked around in all sorts of different terrain.

Superbowl Weekend in Iowa

Or you could call it the Cyclones vs. Hawkeyes weekend!

However, it was also my birthday on Friday, yep the 13th!  It was the exact same day 28 years ago, too . . . and yes I can hear you all saying "ahhh that explains it!"  Trust me, heard that one a time or two.  It's gotten old now.

Breakfast
Popcorn @ the movies!
Friday:  Nick + I took off work because it was the actual day of my birthday!  We slept in a little bit and let Cooper sleep in, too.  Coop typically is dropped off to baby school around 7a.m., but Friday he arrived around 8:30!  His class was already having snack time in the cafeteria, so food distraction meant for an easy drop off!  After that Nick + I headed to Polk City to have breakfast at Reising Sun Cafe, super cute place that my friend Molly introduced me to while they lived there.  We headed home to hang out and enjoy the piece and quiet . . . then headed to the movie, We're the Millers, in the afternoon!  We actually met my mom at the movies, since she had come to town a little early for the big game on Saturday.  We're the Millers was actually pretty funny, but after it was over we picked Coop up from baby school.  After picking Coop up, we took the annual neighbor boys picture in their game gear . . . one little cyclone and one little hawkeye!
2012 vs 2013

Saturday:  The big CYHAWK series game day!  Unfortunately, I'll tell you right now it wasn't the outcome we wanted and it's a Hawkeye State this year.  We were so pumped + excited for this football season, but it's let us down so far.  Grandma Jane watched Cooper, again, so we could go with my family and our friends to the tailgate and game.  This was an extra special tailgate:  we celebrated Mike Harper's 30th birthday a few weeks early!!  His wife, Katie, totally surprised him . . . he wasn't expecting to see a lot of his friends from up North, or to get a birthday cake, or to get a LIMO to take him back to DSM after the game, or to be staying in a hotel for the evening!  Enjoy some photos from the day + evening:

Our little family before we left to tailgate!  We always put Coop in his game day gear!

Sunday:  I spent my afternoon with a couple of great gals . . . Justine + Katie!  We got our nails and toes done, totally needed it!  Afterwards we stopped by Orange Leaf (frozen yogurt) to continue catching up.  Thanks for setting up gals, loved it!

10 Favorite Things from Cooper's 1st Year!

Just like I was meaning to post about Cooper's room approximately 14 months ago, I was also meaning to do this approximately 3 months ago!  Time flies when having little ones around . . . they keep you extra busy, even if you only have 1!

However here is a list of our top 10 favorites + must haves from Cooper's 1st year of life!

10.  Mr. Moo is Cooper's favorite friend + blankie, from Angel Dear.  I was introduced to this product by a friend of a friend in the DSM area before heading back to work, so Cooper was only a couple months old.  It was like icing on the cake when I realized they had a cow!  This gal had them for her boys and began introducing them while nursing.  At this point, Cooper wasn't nursing, but I still tried to introduce when he would eat.  He, of course, was only 9 weeks old and wasn't taking too much interest in the awesome blankie.  However, when Cooper was 8 months old he stayed a couple nights at Blank Children's Hospital.  We brought Moo along just as a reminder of "home" and Cooper became super attached!  Moo hasn't left his side since . . . we've actually had to purchase another one so one can stay at baby school for a week at a time (come home for baths on the weekend).  Angel Dear is smart and sells these little animals in two packs or three packs and calls them "A Pair & A Spare" - how cute!  Currently, Moo gets to have breakfast with Cooper in the morning and ride along to baby school.

9.  The NoseFrida!!!!!!!  Seriously, the best snot sucker, EVER!  Well, the ones you get from the hospital aren't too bad either, but this is awesome.  While I was still pregnant we met some new neighbors and I was asking for registry item tips and she highly recommended this.  She warned me that it sounds gross and may take a little getting used to, but worth it.  I couldn't agree more. . . I've talked several moms into putting it on their registries!  Since Cooper has care given to him outside of the home, he's prone to what they call "daycare nose" and boy did he have it his first year of life.  We've even used it recently as that stuffy nose is coming back.

8.  aden + anais:  Probably one of the best brands I've ever been introduced to by a friend in Minnesota who had a little boy older than Cooper.  We have quite a few items from this place, but burpy bibs are one of our favorites!  They start out as a burp rag that a mom can put over her shoulder and it fits so nicely around the curve of your shoulder and neck.  When you're over that stage of your newborn's life and they are now 6 months, sitting up and learning to eat . . . you can put it around their neck and snap it together for them to wear as a bib!  Cooper still drools, so we continue to use these all day everyday, even though he turned 15 months old today!!

7.  More aden + anais!  I told you it was one of my favorite brands, so it shouldn't be a surprise they showed up twice on my top 10 list.  We were given this exact moo cow swaddle as a gift from my friend in MN that introduced me to a+a, while I was still pregnant!  She knew and understood my love of cows at that time and turns out I've successfully passed that onto Cooper, or maybe forced would be a better word.  :)  Anywho . . . these swaddles can be used for more than just swaddling.  When Cooper was a newborn we would use it a lot as a burp rag or blanket to lay or play on while on the floor.  He now uses one everyday at baby school as a light blanket.

6.  We had quite a few different HALO SleepSacks, but this one from pottery barn kids was our favorite.  It operated the exact same as any other HALO SleepSack, but it was just so amazingly soft and warm.  The time we used it was when it was Winter in IA and we needed to ensure Cooper was comfortable, not too cold or hot, and this was the perfect material.  Ours is the exact same as shown, except we had "Hitsman" embroidered on the chest area.  We didn't want to do a blue one or embroider Cooper on it, as we hope to have a second baby who will use it as well!

5.  Carter's pajamas might be the best and are pretty darn cute!  Since Cooper was born 3 weeks early and fell into the "Newborn" weight category, our lovely neighbor went out and picked up a few of these cute pjs and dropped them off at our house to use when we got home from the hospital.  They were even a little too big on him at first.  We continue to purchase the Carter's pj's for each size that he is in.

4.  TommeeTippee Bottle Warmer was pretty much a life-saver!  I mentioned above that Cooper didn't nurse right away, but I had the supply . . . so I chose to strictly pump and use bottles immediately.  The bottle warmer was small enough to drop in his diaper bag and take with us everywhere we went.  I remember taking it to a wedding when he was just over a month old!  It was great to have in the middle of the night when Nick was up feeding Cooper and needed the timer on it to remind him how long the milk had been "warming."  We used the super cute TommeeTippee bottles too, I just loved the squaty look and stars!

3.  The medela Pump In Style Advanced Backpack was also a life saver!  Like I have said a couple times now, Cooper didn't nurse right away.  I was making more than enough supply and wanted to be able to use it.  Every time Cooper ate, I pumped . . . so yes, that was every 3 hours on maternity leave for 9 weeks, even in the middle of the night.  I tried to keep that up at work as well, but it was a lot more difficult than I had ever anticipated.  I had built up some supply to help out, but as I continued to pump less and less at work, it obviously slowed down my supply.  By month 5, my supply was down and Cooper was really hungry one night . . . I decided to try nursing again and IT WORKED!  This helped boost supply and I was able to continue to pump at work.  However, by month 8 we had started mixing formula with the remaining breast-milk that I had.  We made this decision because I realized I wasn't able to keep up with how much this kid was eating and we were going on a trip to Mexico and it would've been a lot to bring the pump with me and all of the milk back, or I would've been pumping + dumping a lot.

2.  A video monitor may be considered a nice-to-have to most people, but it has turned into a necessity for us!  We have the Summer Infant Slim & Secure model.  We originally had it sitting on the edge of the crib, so we could get a closer view of Cooper, but since he moves around more and knocks things off the side of the crib, we now have it hanging above his crib.  You can see that in pictures from his Room post.  It's really nice to see what the little guy is up to . . . if he truly needs something or if he'll work through a few minutes of crying and fall back to sleep on his own.

And here is the . . . .

1.  The Fisher-Price Rock 'n Play is also another baby item that came highly recommended to us while I was still pregnant, particularly from a friend in MN and our neighbor!  It's so lightweight and collapses easily for travelling.  We used the rock 'n play from birth until approximately 5 months of age with Cooper.  It was our bassinet for the first couple weeks for him, right next to our bed.  It would go with me upstairs or downstairs, wherever I was doing something, so he could snooze or hang out in it.  This is definitely another item I try and encourage all mom's to register for.  My mom even told me it's her favorite item and she tells all new pregnant mama's to register for it, too!

Cooper's Room!

This blog post is way overdue. . . I should've done this oh, approximately 14 months ago!  But, here it is . . . many people have asked me what his room looks like.  And I really do want to show off Baby Cy!  My friend, Katie, did one heck of a job on him!

This post will show his room as a newborn and also how it's changed a little bit over the last (almost) 15 months!

As you walk in . . . the first two things you see are the two shelves, one full of books, and the amazing rocker, that is also a recliner!  We purchased the rocker from Suite Dreams, along with the rest of Cooper's furniture.  The bookshelves were purchased from a random online site Nick found . . . we had a hard time finding ones we liked.

A few more things have been added since he was born . . .

When you turn right . . . you will find Cooper's crib and dresser . . .

Here is the crib and dresser now . . . not much is different other than Cooper must sleep with two items, a bamboo swaddle from Aden + Anais and a cow lovie from Angel Dear, named Moo!  He also has sadly outgrown his baby hats, but has some cute big boy hats!

You might've seen Cy in a couple pictures above!  Isn't he awesome!?  Katie hand-painted the tree and baby Cy, along with the two personalized plaques you see in the room.  We're already planning Cooper's next room . . .

When heading towards the crib, we went by the closets . . . this area was plain until these two big life events happened . . . Cooper's baptism in October 2012 and his 1st birthday in June 2012.  Both of those hanging items were on our front door for the events . . . the cross was up for his baptism and we also used it over Easter.  The cow was up the ENTIRE month of June, to celebrate his birthday!

When turning towards the rocker from the dresser, here's what you see . . . The nightstand originally had toys in a basket in the bottom of it, now it's full of more books!  Cooper's library grows all the time!

Hope you enjoyed Cooper's room!
